According to Josephus, a certain Sanballat built a temple for the Samaritans on Mt. Gerizim as a rival place of worship to the Temple in Jerusalem (Ant. 11.304-12). John Hyrcanus of destroyed the temple on Mt. Gerizim in c. 129 BCE, c. two hundred years after its construction.
