Mark
7:1-13 = Matt 15:1-9
| Mark 7
1 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come
from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and 2 saw some of his disciples
eating food with hands that were "unclean," that is, unwashed. 3
(The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their
hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.
4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they
wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing
of cups, pitchers and kettles.) 5 So the Pharisees and teachers
of the law asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according
to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with
'unclean' hands?" 6 He replied, "Isaiah was right when he
prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: "'These people
honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught
by men.' 8 You have let go of the commands of God and are
holding on to the traditions of men." 9 And he said to them: "You
have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to
observe your own traditions! 10 For Moses said, 'Honor your
father and your mother,' and, 'Anyone who curses his father or mother
must be put to death.' 11 But you say that if a man says to
his father or mother: 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received
from me is Korban' (that is, a gift devoted to God), 12 then you
no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. 13
Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have
handed down. And you do many things like that." |
Matthew 15
1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from
Jerusalem and asked, 2 "Why do your disciples break the tradition
of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!" 3 Jesus
replied, "And why do you break the command of God for the sake of
your tradition? 4 For God said, 'Honor your father and mother'
and 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.'
5 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever
help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted
to God,' 6 he is not to 'honor his father' with it. Thus you nullify
the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites!
Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 8 "'These people
honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 They
worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'"

14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf
they had with them in the boat. 15 "Be careful," Jesus warned them.
"Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod."
16 They discussed this with one another and said, "It is because
we have no bread." 17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them:
"Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see
or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Do you have eyes but
fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don't you remember?
19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many
basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?" "Twelve," they replied. 20
"And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many
basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?" They answered, "Seven."
21 He said to them, "Do you still not understand?"

Matthew 16
5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take
bread. 6 "Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard
against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." 7 They discussed
this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any
bread." 8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little
faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?
9 Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves
for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls
you gathered? 11 How is it you don't understand that I was not talking
to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the
Pharisees and Sadducees." 12 Then they understood that he was not
telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against
the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. |

delight. 38 As he taught, Jesus said, "Watch out for the teachers

you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden

practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. 43 "Woe
to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the
synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 "Woe to you, because
you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without knowing

46 Jesus replied, "And you experts in the law, woe to you, because
you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you

because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your forefathers
who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what
your forefathers did; they killed the prophets, and you build their

them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others
they will persecute.' 50 Therefore this generation will be held
responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed
since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel to the
blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary.
Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it
all. 52 "Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken
away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and
you have hindered those who were entering."

25 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!
You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full
of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the
inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
23 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!
You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cumin. But you have
neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy
and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without
neglecting the former. 24 24 You blind guides. You strain out a

banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7 they
love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them

but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
29 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!
You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the
righteous. 30 And you say, 'If we had lived in the days of
our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding
the blood of the prophets.'
34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers.
Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in
your synagogues and pursue from town to town. 35 And so upon
you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth,
from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of
Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36
I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation.

11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For whoever
exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be
exalted.
15 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!
You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he

16 "Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'If anyone swears by the temple,

the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 18 You also
say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone
swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.' 19 You blind
men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift
sacred? 20 Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it
and by everything on it. 21 And he who swears by the temple
swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22 And he who swears
by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it.
24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
25 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating.
Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him,
"Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" 29 "The
most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel,
the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind
and with all your strength.' [Deut. 6:4, 5] 31 The second
is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' [Lev. 19:18] There
is no commandment greater than these." 32 "Well said, teacher,"
the man replied. "You are right in saying that God is one and there
is no other but him. 33 To love him with all your heart, with
all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your
neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings
and sacrifices." 34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely,
he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And from
then on no one dared ask him any more questions. |

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees
got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested
him with this question: 36 "Teacher, which is the greatest
commandment in the Law?" 37 Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord
your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all
your mind.'[Deut. 6:5] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself' [Lev.
19:18]. 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
|
| Luke 10
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.
"Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
26 "What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"
27 He answered: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your
mind' [Deut. 6:5]; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' [Lev.
19:18]" 28 "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do
this and you will live." |

14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen tome,
everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a man can make
him 'unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of
a man that makes him 'unclean.'" 17 After he had left the
crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this
parable. 18 "Are you so dull?" he asked. "Don't you see that
nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him 'unclean'?
19 For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then
out of his body." (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods "clean.")
20 He went on: "What comes out of a man is what makes him 'unclean.'
21 For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual
immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 greed, malice, deceit,
lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these
evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.'"

and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they
heard this?" 13 He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly
Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14
Leave them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a
blind man, both will fall into a pit." 15 Peter said, "Explain the
parable to us." 16 "Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them. 17
"Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach
and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of the
mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' 19 For
out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality,
theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what make a man 'unclean';
but eating with unwashed hands does not make him 'unclean.'" |

or to kill?" But they remained silent. 5 He looked around
at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts,

11 He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into
a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?
12 How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is
lawful to do good on the Sabbath." 13 Then he said to the man, "Stretch

"I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do
evil, to save life or to destroy it?" 10 He looked around
at them all, and then said to the man, "Stretch out your hand."
He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But they
were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might

called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from
your infirmity." 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately
she straightened up and praised God. 14 Indignant because Jesus
had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue ruler said to the people,
"There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days,
not on the Sabbath." 15 The Lord answered him, "You hypocrites!
Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from
the stall and lead it out to give it water? 16 Then should not this
woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen
long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?"

were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing. |

So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him away.

into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull him
out?" 6 And they had nothing to say. |

of whatever disease he had.") 5 One who was there had been an
invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and
learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked
him, "Do you want to get well?" 7 "Sir," the invalid replied,
"I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred.
While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me."
8 Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk."
9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The
day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10 and so the Jews
said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids
you to carry your mat." 11 But he replied, "The man who made me well
said to me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.'" 12 So they asked him,
"Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?" 13 The man
who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away
into the crowd that was there. 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple
and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something
worse may happen to you." 15 The man went away and told the Jews that
it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 For this reason the Jews
were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.
17 But he answered them, "My Father is working until now, and
I myself am working." 18 For this reason therefore the Jews were
seeking all the more to kill him, because he not only was breaking
the Sabbath, but also was calling God his own Father, making himself
equal with God. |

7:16-24
| 16 Jesus answered, "My
teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me. 17 If anyone
chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes
from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 He who speaks on his own
does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor
of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false
about him. 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you
keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?" 20 "You are demon-possessed,"
the crowd answered. "Who is trying to kill you?" 21 Jesus said to
them, "I did one miracle, and you are all astonished. 22 Yet, because
Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from
Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a child on the Sabbath.
23 Now if a child can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law
of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing
the whole man on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging by mere appearances,
and make a right judgment." |

9:1-34
| 1 As he went along, he
saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi,
who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 3 "Neither
this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so
that the work of God might be displayed in his life. 4 As long
as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming,
when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light
of the world." 6 Having said this, he spit on the ground, made
some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. 7 "Go,"
he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means Sent).
So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. 8 His neighbors
and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, "Isn't this the
same man who used to sit and beg?" 9 Some claimed that he was. Others
said, "No, he only looks like him." But he himself insisted, "I am
the man." 10 "How then were your eyes opened?" they demanded. 11 He
replied, "The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes.
He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then
I could see." 12 "Where is this man?" they asked him. "I don't know,"
he said. 13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
14 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man's
eyes was a Sabbath. 15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how
he had received his sight. "He put mud on my eyes," the man replied,
"and I washed, and now I see." 16 Some of the Pharisees said, "This
man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." But others
asked, "How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?" So they were divided.
17 Finally they turned again to the blind man, "What have you to say
about him? It was your eyes he opened." The man replied, "He is a
prophet." 18 The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind
and had received his sight until they sent for the man's parents.
19 "Is this your son?" they asked. "Is this the one you say was born
blind? How is it that now he can see?" 20 "We know he is our
son," the parents answered, "and we know he was born blind.
21 But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don't know.
Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself." 22 His parents
said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews
had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ
would be put out of the synagogue. 23 That was why his parents
said, "He is of age; ask him." 24 A second time they summoned
the man who had been blind. "Give glory to God, [2]" they said. "We
know this man is a sinner." 25 He replied, "Whether he is a
sinner or not, I don't know. One thing I do know. I was blind but
now I see!" 26 Then they asked him, "What did he do to you?
How did he open your eyes?" 27 He answered, "I have told you
already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again?
Do you want to become his disciples, too?" 28 Then they hurled
insults at him and said, "You are this fellow's disciple! We are disciples
of Moses! 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this
fellow, we don't even know where he comes from." 30 The man answered,
"Now that is remarkable! You don't know where he comes from, yet he
opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He
listens to the godly man who does his will. 32 Nobody has ever heard
of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were
not from God, he could do nothing." 34 To this they replied, "You
were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!" And they threw
him out. |

| 33 "Again, you have heard
that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath,
but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' 34 But I tell
you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne;
35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for
it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head,
for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 Simply let your
'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from
the evil one. |

2 Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful
for a man to divorce his wife?" 3 "What did Moses command
you?" he replied. 4 They said, "Moses permitted a man to write
a certificate of divorce and send her away." 5 "It was because your
hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied.
6 "But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.'
[Gen. 1:27] 7 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother
and be united to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh.'
[Gen. 2:24] So they are no longer two, but one. 9 Therefore
what God has joined together, let man not separate." 10 When they
were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11
He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman
commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband
and marries another man, she commits adultery."

3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful
for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?" 4
"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator
'made them male and female,' [Gen. 1:27] 5 and said, 'For
this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united
to his wife, and the two
will become one flesh' [Gen. 2:24]? 6 So they are no longer
two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not
separate." 7 "Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man
give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?"
8 Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because
your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.
9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital
unfaith- fulness, and marries another woman commits adultery."
10 The disciples said to him, "If this is the situation between
a husband and wife, it is better not to marry." 11 Jesus replied,
"Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has
been given. |

and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he had done, and the
children who were shouting in the Temple, "Hosanna to the son
