Mark
6:1-6 = Matt 13:53-58
| Mark 6:1-5
1 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his
disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue,
and many who heard him were amazed. "Where did this man get these
things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given him
and such dunameis as these are performed through his hands?
3 Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother
of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with
us?" And they took offense at him. 4 Jesus said to them, "Only in
his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet
without honor." 5 He could not do any dunamis there, except
lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 And he was amazed
at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village
to village.

Matthew 13:53-58
53 When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there.
54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their
synagogue, and they were amazed. "Where did this man get this wisdom
and these dunameis?" they asked. 55 "Isn't this the carpenter's
son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James,
Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren't all his sisters with us? Where
then did this man get all these things?" 57 And they took
offense at him. But Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown and
in his own house is a prophet without honor." 58 And he did not
do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

Matthew
11:20-24 = Luke 10:13-15
| Matthew 11
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his
miracles (dunameis) had been performed, because they did
not repent. 21 "Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!
If the miracles (dunameis) that were performed in you had
been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long
ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be
more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for
you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies?
No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles (dunameis)
that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would
have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will
be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you." |
Luke 10
13 "Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles
(dunameis) that were performed in you had been performed
in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in
sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and
Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum,
will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to
the depths.

19:37
| When he came near the
place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd
of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the
miracles they had seen. |

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us
go over to the other side." 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they
took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also
other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the
waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.
38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples
woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't
you care if we drown?" 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and
said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and
it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, "Why
are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"
41 They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even
the wind and the waves obey him!" |

22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their
own dead." 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples
followed him. 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up
on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But
Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying,
"Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" 26 He replied,
"You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and
rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this?
Even the winds and the waves obey him!"

Luke 8
22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other
side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out. 23
As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake,
so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're
going to drown!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters;
the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 "Where is your faith?"
he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another,
"Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they
obey him."

35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to
him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very
late. 36 Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding
countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat." 37
But he answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to
him, "That would take eight months of a man's wages! Are we
to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?"
38 "How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see." When they
found out, they said, "Five--and two fish." 39 Then Jesus
directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green
grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven,
he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples
to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them
all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples
picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.
44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.

Matthew 14
13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately
to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on
foot from the towns.14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd,
he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 As evening approached,
the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and
it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go
to the villages and buy themselves some food." 16 Jesus replied,
"They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat." 17
"We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered.
18 "Bring them here to me," he said. 19 And he directed the
people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the
two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the
loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave
them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and
the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that
were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five
thousand men, besides women and children.

Luke 9
12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, "Send
the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside
and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here."
13 He replied, "You give them something to eat." They answered,
"We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we
go and buy food for all this crowd." 14 (About five thousand
men were there.) But he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down
in groups of about fifty each." 15 The disciples did so, and everybody
sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking
up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave
them to the disciples to set before the people. 17 They all ate
and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls
of broken pieces that were left over.

3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples.
4 The Jewish Passover Feast was near. 5 When Jesus looked up
and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where
shall we buy bread for these people to eat?" 6 He asked this
only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to
do. 7 Philip answered him, "Eight months' wages would not buy
enough bread for each one to have a bite!" 8 Another of his disciples,
Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, 9 "Here is a boy with five
small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among
so many?" 10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was
plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand
of them. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed
to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with
the fish. 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to
his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing
be wasted."
13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces
of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14 After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began
to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world." |

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go
on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.
46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.
47 When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and
he was alone on land.
48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind
was against them. About the fourth watch of the night he went out
to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but
when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.
They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.
Immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is
I. Don't be afraid." 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them,
and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, 52 for they
had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.

Matthew 14
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go
on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by
himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the
boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by
the waves because the wind was against it. 25 During the fourth
watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified.
"It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't
be afraid." 28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come
to you on the water." 29 "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out
of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink,
cried out, "Lord, save me!" 31 Immediately Jesus reached out
his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did
you doubt?" 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died
down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying,
"Truly you are the Son of God." |
John 6
15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king
by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself. 16 When evening
came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into
a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was
dark, and Jesus
had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and
the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed three or three
and a half miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on
the water; and they we re terrified. 20 But he said to them,
"It is I; don't be afraid." 21 Then they were willing to take
him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where
they were heading.

1 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had
nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2 "I
have compassion for these people; they have already been with me
three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry,
they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a
long distance." 4 His disciples answered, "But where in this remote
place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?" 5 "How many
loaves do you have?" Jesus asked. "Seven," they replied. 6 He told
the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven
loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples
to set before the people, and they did so. 7 They had a few small
fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples
to distribute them. 8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward
the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were
left over. 9 About four thousand men were present. And having
sent them away, 10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went
to the region of Dalmanutha. 11The Pharisees came and began to question
Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. 12 He
sighed deeply and said, "Why does this generation ask for a miraculous
sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it." 13 Then
he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side. |
Matthew 15
32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion
for these people; they have already been with me three days and
have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or
they may collapse on the way."
33 His disciples answered, "Where could we get enough bread in this
remote place to feed such a
crowd?" 34 "How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked. "Seven,"
they replied, "and a few small fish." 35 He told the crowd to sit
down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish,
and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the
disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37 They all ate and were
satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of
broken pieces that were left over. 38 The number of those
who ate was four thousand, besides women and children. 39 After
Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to
the vicinity of Magadan.

2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and
led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he
was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling
white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them.
4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking
with Jesus. 5 Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for
us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for you, one for
Moses and one for Elijah." 6 (He did not know what to say,
they were so frightened.) 7 Then a cloud appeared and enveloped
them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is my Son, whom I love.
Listen to him!" 8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they
no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. 9 As they were
coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone
what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what "rising from
the dead" meant.

Matthew 17
1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the
brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the
sun, and his clothes became as white
as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses
and Elijah, talking with Jesus. 4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord,
it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters--one
for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." 5 While he was
still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from
the cloud said, "This is
my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground,
terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he
said. "Don't be afraid." 8 When they looked up, they saw no
one except Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain,
Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until
the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

Luke 9
28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John
and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29
As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes
became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses
and Elijah, 31 appeared in glorious splendor, talking with
Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring
to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were
very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory
and the two men standing with him.
33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, "Master, it
is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for
you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." (He did not know what he
was
saying.) 34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped
them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A
voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, whom I have
chosen; listen to him." 36 When the voice had spoken, they found
that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves, and
told no one at that time what they had seen. |

12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.
13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out
if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves,
because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree,
"May no one ever eat fruit from you again." And his disciples heard
him say
it.
20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered
from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, "Rabbi,
look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!" |

he was hungry.
19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing
on it except leaves. Then he said to it, "May you never bear fruit
again!" Immediately the tree withered. 20 When the disciples
saw this, they were amazed. "How did the fig tree wither so quickly?"
they asked.

17:24-27
| 24 After Jesus and his
disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma
tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple
tax?" 25 "Yes, he does," he replied. When Peter came into the
house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" he
asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes--from
their own sons or from others?" 26 "From others," Peter answered.
"Then the sons are exempt," Jesus said to him. 27 "But so that
we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take
the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma
coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours." |

1:43-50
| 43 The next day Jesus
decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow
me." 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses
wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus
of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." 46 "Nazareth! Can anything
good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip.
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is
a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false." 48 "How do you
know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were
still under the fig tree before Philip called you." 49 Then
Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King
of Israel." 50 Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you
under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that." |

2:1-11
| 1 On the third day a wedding
took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and Jesus
and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When
the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine."
4 "Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My time has
not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever
he tells you." 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind
used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty
to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with
water"; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them,
"Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They
did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had
been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come
from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called
the bridegroom aside 10 and said, "Everyone brings out the choice
wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too
much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." 11 This,
the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee.
He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him. |
John
4:1-19
| 1 The Pharisees heard
that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John, 2 although
in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. 3 When the
Lord learned of this, he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
4 Now he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town in Samaria
called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son
Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from
the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will
you give me a drink?" 8 (His disciples had gone into the town
to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a
Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?"
(For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered
her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for
a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living
water." 11 "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw
with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?
12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and
drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?"
13 Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty
again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.
Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water
welling up to eternal life." 15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give
me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming
here to draw water." 16 He told her, "Go, call your husband and come
back." 17 "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You
are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have
had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What
you have just said is quite true." 19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can
see that you are a prophet. |
John
21:1-11
| 1 Afterward Jesus appeared
again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. It happened
this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana
in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.
3 "I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll
go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night
they caught nothing. 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on
the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5
He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they
answered. 6 He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the
boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul
the net in because of the large number of fish. 7 Then the disciple
whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon
Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment
around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.
8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of
fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.
9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish
on it, and some bread. 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of
the fish you have just caught." 11 Simon Peter climbed aboard
and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, but even with
so many the net was not torn. |
John
4:48
| 46 Therefore He came again
to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was
a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47 When he heard
that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and
was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the
point of death. 48 So Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see
signs and wonders, you simply will not believe." 49 The royal
official said to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies."
50 Jesus said to him, "Go; your son lives." The man believed
the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. |
John
12:37-42
| 37 Even after Jesus had
done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would
not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the
prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm
of the Lord been revealed?" [Isaiah 53:1] 39 For this reason
they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: 40"
He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither
see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and
I would heal them." [Isaiah 6:10] 41 Isaiah said this because
he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him. 42 Yet at the same
time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the
Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be
put out of the synagogue. |
