Isa
11:2-3
| 2 The Spirit of the Yahweh
will rest on him—the spirit of wisdom
and of understanding, the spirit of counsel
and of power, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Yahweh—3
and he will delight in the fear of the Yahweh. He will not judge by
what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears. |
Mark
4:26-29
| 26 He also said, "This
is what the Kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground.
27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and
grows, though he does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil
produces grain--first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel
in the head. 29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle
to it, because the harvest has come." |
Mark
4:30-32; Matt 13:31-32 = Luke 13:18-19
| Mark 4 30
Again he said, "What shall we say the Kingdom of God is like, or
what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a
mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground.
32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden
plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch
in its shade." |
| Matthew 13
31 He told them another
parable: "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed, which a
man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest
of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden
plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and
perch in its branches." |
Luke 13
18 Then Jesus asked,
"What is the Kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? 19
It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden.
It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air perched in its
branches."

Matt
13:33 = Luke 13:20
| Matt 13:33 He
told them still another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like
yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour
until it worked all through the dough." |
Luke 13:20 Again
he asked, "What shall I compare he Kingdom of God to? It
is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount
of flour until it worked all through the dough."
|
Matt
13:24-30, 36-43
| 24 Jesus told them another
parable: "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who sowed good seed
in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy
came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When
the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
27 "The owner's servants came to him and said, 'Sir, didn't you sow
good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?'
28 "'An enemy did this,' he replied. "The servants asked him, 'Do
you want us to go and pull them up?' 29 "'No,' he answered,
'because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat
with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that
time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them
in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my
barn.'" 36
Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came
to him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the
field." 37 He answered, "The one who sowed the good seed is
the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed
stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the
evil one, 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The
harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
40 "As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will
be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send out
his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that
causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into
the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of
their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. |
Matt
13:44; Matt 13:45-46
| Matt 13:44 "The
Kingdom of Heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man
found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all
he had and bought that field. |
| Matt 13:45-46 45
"Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant looking for fine
pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away
and sold everything he had and bought it. |
Matt
13:47-50
| 47 "Once again, the Kingdom
of Heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught
all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled
it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish
in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be
at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked
from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace, where
there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. |
Matt
13:51-52
| 51 "Have you understood
all these things?" Jesus asked. "Yes," they replied. 52 He said
to them, "Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed
about the Kingdom of Heaven is like the owner of a house who brings
out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old." |
Matt
18:23-35
| 23 "Therefore, the Kingdom
of Heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.
24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents
was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master
ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had
be sold to repay the debt. 26 "The servant fell on his knees before
him. 'Be patient with me,' he begged, 'and I will pay back everything.'
27 The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let
him go. 28 "But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow
servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and
began to choke him. 'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded. 29 "His
fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, 'Be patient with
me, and I will pay you back.' 30 "But he refused. Instead, he
went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the
debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were
greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that
had happened. 32 "Then the master called the servant in. 'You
wicked servant,' he said, 'I canceled all that debt of yours because
you begged me to. 33 Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow
servant just as I had on you?' 34 In anger his master turned
him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all
he owed. 35 "This is how my heavenly Father will treat each
of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart." |
Matt
20:1-15
| 1 "For the Kingdom of
Heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire
men to work in his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay them a denarius for
the day and sent them into his vineyard. 3 "About the third
hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing
nothing. 4 He told them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard,
and I will pay you whatever is right.' 5 So they went. "He went
out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same
thing. 6 About the eleventh hour he went out and found still
others standing around. He asked them, 'Why have you been standing
here all day long doing nothing?' 7 "'Because no one has hired us,'
they answered. "He said to them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard.'
8 "When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman,
'Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last
ones hired and going on to the first.' 9 "The workers who were
hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius.
10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive
more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11 When
they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.
12 'These men who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said,
'and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the
work and the heat of the day.' 13 "But he answered one of them,
'Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for
a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the man
who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15 Don't I have the
right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because
I am generous?' |

16 "No one sews a patch

Luke 5
36 He told them this
parable: "No one tears a patch from a new garment and sews it on
an old one. If he does, he will have torn the new garment, and the
patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours
new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst

| Mark 4
1 Again Jesus began to
teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large
that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all
the people were along the shore at the water's edge. 2 He taught
them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3
"Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering
the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it
up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much
soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was
shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched,
and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell
among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they
did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil.
It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying thirty, sixty,
or even a hundred times." 9 Then Jesus said, "He who has ears
to hear, let him hear."
13 Then Jesus said to
them, "Don't you understand this parable? How then will you understand
any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people
are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as
they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown
in them. 16
Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once
receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last
only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of
the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed
sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this
life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things
come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others,
like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce
a crop--thirty, sixty or even a hundred
times what was sown." |
Matthew
13 1 That same
day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such
large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat
in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he
told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer went out to
sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along
the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on
rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly,
because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up,
the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no
root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked
the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it
produced a crop--a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
9 He who has ears, let him hear."
18 "Listen then to what
the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message
about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes
and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown
along the path. 20 The one who received the seed that fell
on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives
it with joy. 21 But since he has no root, he lasts only a short
time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he
quickly falls away. 22 The one who received the seed that
fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries
of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it
unfruitful. 23 But the one who received the seed that fell
on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He
produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what
was sown. |
Luke 8
4 While a large crowd
was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town,
he told this parable: 5 "A farmer went out to sow his seed.
As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was
trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. 6 Some fell
on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had
no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up
with it and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil.
It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown."
When he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let
him hear."
11 "This is the meaning
of the parable: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those along
the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes
away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and
be saved. 13 Those on the rock are the ones who receive the
word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They
believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.
14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but
as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches
and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on
good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear
the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

13 22 Then Jesus
went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way
to Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked him, "Lord, are only a few
people going to be saved?" He said to them, 24 "Make every effort
to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will
try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house
gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and
pleading, 'Sir, open the door for us.' "But he will answer, 'I don't
know you or where you come from.' 26 "Then you will say, 'We
ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.' 27
"But he will reply, 'I don't know you or where you come from. Away
from me, all you evildoers!' 28 "There will be weeping there, and
gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all
the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves will be thrown
out. 29 People will come from east and west and north and
south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of
God. 30 Indeed there are those who are last who will be first,
and first who will be last." |
Matthew 7

( 21 "Not everyone who

22 Many will say to me

go to look for the one that wandered off? 13 And if he finds

about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14 In the same
way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little

Luke 15
3 Then Jesus told them
this parable: 4 "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and
loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open
country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And
when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and
goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and

| 11 Jesus continued: "There
was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father,
'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property
between them. 13 "Not long after that, the younger son
got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered
his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything,
there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be
in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of
that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.
16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs
were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17 "When he came
to his senses, he said, 'How
many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving
to death! 18 I willset out and go back to my father and say
to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of
your hired men.' 20 Sohe got up and went to his father. "But
while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was
filled with compassion for
him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
21 "The son said
to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am
no longer worthyto be called your son.' 22"But the father said
to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on
him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let'shave a feast and celebrate.
24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and
isfound.' So they began to celebrate. 25 "Meanwhile, the older
son was in the field. When he came near
the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of
the servants and asked himwhat was going on. 27 'Your brother
has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fattened
calf because he has him back safe and sound.' 28 "The
older brother became angry and refused to go
in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered
his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you
and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a
young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when
this son of yours who has squandered your property with
prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!'
31 "'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything
I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because
this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and
is found.'" |

his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,

23 Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom

than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour
to his life? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing,
why do you worry about the rest? 27 "Consider how the lilies
grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon
in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28 If that
is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today,
and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe
you, O you of little faith! 29 And do not set your heart on
what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For
the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows
that you need them. 31 But seek his Kingdom, and these things
will be added unto to you. 32 "Do not be afraid, little flock,
for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.

Matthew 6
25 "Therefore I tell
you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or
about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important
than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look
at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in
barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much
more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add
a single hour to his life? 28 "And why do you worry about
clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor
or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his
splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how
God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow
is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you
of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we
eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For
the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father
knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his Kingdom and his
righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. 34 Therefore
do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Each day has enough trouble of its own. |

12 18 Then the
Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a
question.
19 "Teacher," they said, "Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother
dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow
and have children for his brother. 20 Now there were seven
brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children.
21 The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no
child. It was the same with the third. 22 In fact, none of
the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too.
23 At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were
married to her?" 24 Jesus replied, "Are you not in error because
you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25 When
the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage;
they will be like the angels in heaven. 26 Now about the dead
rising—have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account
of the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the
God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob' [Exodus 3:6]? 27 He is
not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!"
|
Matthew
22 23 That same
day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him
with a question. 24 "Teacher," they said, "Moses told us that
if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the
widow and have children for him. 25 Now there were seven brothers
among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children,
he left his wife to his brother. 26 The same thing happened
to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27
Finally, the woman died. 28 Now then, at the resurrection,
whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married
to her?" 29
Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures
or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will neither
marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in
heaven. 31 But about the resurrection of the dead—have
you not read what God said to you, 32 'I am the God of Abraham,
the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob' [Exodus 3:6]? He is not
the God of the dead but of the living." 33 When the crowds
heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.

27 Some of the Sadducees,
who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question. 28
"Teacher," they said, "Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother

and have children for his brother. 29 Now there were seven
brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless.
30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the
same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally,
the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose
wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?" 34
Jesus replied, "The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.
35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age
and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be
given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like
the angels. They are God's children, since they are children of
the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the bush, even
Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord 'the God
of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' [Exodus
3:6] 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living,
for to him all are alive." 39 Some of the teachers of the
law responded, "Well said, teacher!" 40 And no one dared to
ask him any more questions. |

he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the Kingdom

Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed
are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you
and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. 23
Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward
in heaven, for that is how their fathers treated the prophets.
24 But woe to you who
are rich, for you have already received your comfort. 25 Woe to
you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who
laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when all men

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,

Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, "Do
you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other
Galileans because they suffered this way? 3 I tell you, no!
But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen

16:19-31

who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every
day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with
sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table.
Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 "The time came when
the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The
rich man lso died and was buried. 23
In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far
away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, 'Father
Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger
in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
25 "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you
received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but
now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all
this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those
who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over
from there to us.' 27 "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father,
send Lazarus to my father's house, 28 for I have five brothers. Let
him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'
29 "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen
to them.' 30 "'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone
