Reconstruction of a Triclinium

A  typical Greek and Roman house included a triclinium, the dining room, named after the couch used to hold the diners.  The diners reclined on their left sides on the triclinia with their heads facing the table; usually three people occupied a triclinium.  Jews adopted the custom of reclining on triclinia while dining, which explains why Jesus and the disciples reclined at Jesus' last Passover meal.
