The Jordan River is the longest and most important river in Palestine.  Beginning in foothills of Mt. Hermon, the Jordan River flows southward through the Sea of Galilee and eventually empties into the Dead Sea, some 1292 feet below the level of the Mediterranean Sea.  During its course to the Dead Sea, the Jordan River drops about 3000 feet.
