The Olympieion
Begun in 515 BCE by Peristratos the Younger, the Olympieion was left unfinished because of the fall of the tyranny in Athens. Antiochus IV Epiphanes resumed construction in 174 BCE, but the Temple to Zeus Olympios was not completed until 124/25 CE by Hadrian. Inside the Temple stood a large statue of Zeus made of gold and ivory (chryselephantine). |
