Bible Study from a Scroll! - by David Lowe
Not normally
what you might consider an advance in technology, huh? Well, far from a crinkled piece of
parchment, what we are talking about here is The Scroll Multimedia Study Bible on
CD-ROM for Windows from Electronic Christian Media. Incorporating a complete text search
and a comprehensive topical index search, The Scroll can be just the ticket for
those of us who, shall we say, have momentary amnesia regarding the scriptures. Features
include:
Full text (King James version)
Author, Date, Outline and Background
Photos and Illustrations
Videos, Animation, Music and Sounds
Maps and City Definitions.
Some additional features like annotation
for personal notes and bookmarks for your current study areas are also very useful. As for
incorporating The Scroll into devotions, group studies or lectures, any text selection can
be copied to the clipboard and inserted into a word processor for editing and creating
organized lessons. The additional 190,000 words of commentary can also help provide
insight to your studies.
Although the full motion video is a little weak, the multimedia in general is a nice touch
to help keep things lively. One feature that is lacking, however, is the ability to print
graphics directly. Presently, the only way to use the graphics is to "snap" the
screen and paste it into a graphics program. Later versions reportedly will have features
that enable printing graphics and enlarged full motion video. One technical note: In
addition to the usual 386 multimedia package requirements to run The Scroll
properly, you must have a SVGA monitor capable of 8OO X 6OO resolution or everything is
off center.
All in all, at $59.00 plus $3.00 shipping and handling, The Scroll is a good
value for just about anyone who wants an electronic study Bible. The added dimension of
multimedia is a useful tool as well as fun. The Scroll is available directly from
Electronic Christian Media, 19 Dresden Street, Riverview, New Brunswick, Canada E1B 3G8,
or call (506) 381-7326.

The Scroll! - by Paul Mitchell
The Scroll is such an excellent package, highly interactive, easy to use,
enjoyable, informative, educative .... the adjectives just roll on. My copy is a
KJV version. On opening any book of the Bible, one is presented with a scroll which gives
the ability to go to any chapter, to look at details of the writing of the book, an
excellent outline of its contents and the chronological background. The text is very full
of hot spots to bring up references for further study, photos and even sound.
The search facility is the best one I have seen as it will search not
only every book in the Bible, but also in all other topics on the CD e.g. enter
"harvest" and 54 references are found plus a series of pictures. Furthermore
once in the topics, a click can return the user to the starting point biblical passage,
often not found on other CDs. I was intrigued to find 160 references on searching for
"wine" but only 2 for "beer", one informing me that it was the name of
the well whereof the Lord spake with Moses "Gather the people together and I will
give thee water."
Although the theologian would find the absence of Strong's numbers a disadvantage and
would probably look elsewhere, with such a wealth of easily found information, I would
rate this the best buy for the Christian beginner, the student, and
anyone who is curious to find out more. With a retail price of around 50 pounds, it would
make the ideal Christmas present for friend or family and I'm sure your local vicar would
love one.
