These
gates were prophecied to be destroyed by fire in Nahum 3:13. "Behold, thy people in
the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine
enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars." In 612 B.C. the Babylonian and Scythian
armies surrounded Nineveh and the Tigris river flooded breaking down part of the wall.
Then the city was destroyed by fire including these gates.
