Arcadian Way, Ephesus
A view of
the Arcadian Way, from the Theatre. It was the largest Greek theatre in Asia
Minor and is reputed to have accommodated fifty thousand spectators. It also
had a great stadium where races were run. Ephesus was a very important port
in the Roman province of Asia. Roads ran from Ephesus to the interior cities
of the province. It was a center of commerce some of which was generated by
the temple of Artemis Diana, a mile and a half north-east of the city. Paul's
ministry alarmed those who made their living off the cult. Acts 19:19
